Cathy Le Feuvre book signing

LION Hudson has published a new book on Salvation Army founders, William and Catherine Booth. Written by Staines corps member Cathy Le Feuvre, William and Catherine tells the couple’s love story. ‘The main message that I want to get across in the book is that despite their challenges, Catherine and William always believed God was directing their lives,’

‘They were sometimes confused, but eventually they developed into an amazing couple who created this fantastic organisation which is The Salvation Army.’

Cathy will be launching her new book at Canaan Bookshop, 121 High Street, Staines TW18 4PD.

On Sunday 10 November during the evening meeting Cathy will talk about her new book and after meeting books will be available to buy and have signed.

If you miss these two opportunities then don’t worry as Cathy will also be signing copies of William and Catherine on Sunday 17 November after the morning meeting.

Syria: A message from the General

Since its early days The Salvation Army has responded to crises caused by natural disaster, famine and war. Today, I am calling upon Salvationists worldwide to pray for peace in Syria and grace and wisdom for elected officials the world over who are adjudicating on how to manage the tremendous humanitarian crisis that has enveloped the region. Syria will be the focus of the Worldwide Prayer Meeting on Thursday 12 September 2013.

A news item on the United Nations website www.un.org reports: ‘With an estimated 5,000 desperate Syrians fleeing their homes every day, the spiralling violence in the country has now created more than two million refugees. As of the end of August, the number of Syrians registered as refugees or pending registration was 110,000 in Egypt, 168,000 in Iraq, 515,000 in Jordan, 716,000 in Lebanon and 460,000 in Turkey. Over half of them are children under 17 years of age. The refugee crisis has placed an overwhelming burden on the host countries’ infrastructures, economies and societies, and with an average of almost 5,000 Syrians fleeing into these countries every day, the need for international support has reached a critical stage.’

The Salvation Army has been invited to participate in and support the humanitarian effort in Jordan. Officials from The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters in London, UK, are actively working in partnership with other non-governmental organisation representatives and a Salvation Army team is soon to depart for the region.

As world leader of The Salvation Army, I believe it is our Christian duty to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Jordan both practically and prayerfully. Please join me and Commissioner Silvia as together we pray for peace. I invite Salvationists around the world to unite in prayer […]

Ian Squire – Mission For Vision

200 million people need glasses just to lead a normal life.

Mission For Vision is committed to providing vision to those living in the deprived areas of the developing world. The charity comprises optometrists and dispensing opticians willing to volunteer their skills, time and money to improve the quality of life for others.

For many, just obtaining the basics for life is a daily struggle, and for those with deficient eyesight there is little hope of obtaining either education or employment.

You can make a difference by donating your unwanted glasses, and just £15 would provide someone with a life transforming cataract operation.

Ian Squire from Mission For Vision is special guest at Staines corps on Sunday 9 September where he will be speaking at an informal evening at 5:30 pm.

New General announced

Commissioner André Cox, a Swiss-British Salvation Army officer, has been elected as the 20th General of the Christian church and charity. The election took place at the High Council, which saw 117 of The Salvation Army’s senior leaders from around the world gather just outside London for the sacred task of choosing the next international leader.

The General accepted his new responsibility in a spirit of humility, saying that, irrespective of the rank he held, he had not moved away from his original calling to officership – to be God’s servant and to proclaim the gospel. General Cox shares his ministry with his wife, Commissioner Silvia Cox, who is the World President of Women’s Ministries. Together General and Commissioner Cox will lead the 1.5 million strong world-wide church of The Salvation Army.

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, to an English father and Swiss mother, André Cox spent his childhood years in Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom, before moving to Switzerland, where he met his wife and from where they entered training to become Salvation Army officers, taking up their first appointments in 1979.

The 59-year-old General has vast experience of the international ministry of The Salvation Army. In the early years of his Salvation Army officership, General Cox held appointments in Switzerland and Zimbabwe. More recently he has served as the territorial commander in the Southern Africa Territory, the Finland and Estonia Territory and the United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland. In February 2013 he was appointed as Chief of the Staff – second in command of the international Salvation Army.

On being announced as The Salvation Army’s 20th General, the new international leader told more than 10,000 people from around the world watching via a live […]
